Distributed Load Control Using Reliable Low-Data-Rate Power Line Communication

Many demand-response schemes fail because they inconvenience consumers or add unnecessary costs [1], [2]. When participating in a typical scheme, consumer may be subjected to invasive control systems, communication data collection. These can quickly lose their novelty and annoy customers by curtailing availability of appliances, such as electric water heaters air conditioners This paper demonstrates self-organizing demand response scheme that uses power lines natural, “free” infrastructure for communication. The approach shave peak substantially with no attention from the user. Tailored signaling custom application low-data-rate line (PLC) enable loads reliably self-organize demand. Field experiments thermostatically-controlled an actively occupied, 24-floor apartment building demonstrate advantages PLC energy control.
